Arab News – Commerce and Investment Ministry has launched a week-long blood donation campaign for the war heroes in the southern border to commemorate the Kingdom’s 86th National Day.
An official from the ministry said the campaign would be held near mega malls and parks.
“Our idea is to promote the culture of social responsibility toward society amid our regular functions to develop trade and investment in the Kingdom,” the official said.
The program is carried out in cooperation with the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) in Riyadh, which has supplied a fully equipped state-of-the-art mobile vehicle to conduct the blood donation program.
The collected blood from donors will be sent to the blood bank at the southern border and will be used if and when required.
A standard health screening procedure will be carried out prior to the extraction of blood. Each donor has to undergo tests for blood pressure, glucose and hemoglobin count prior to the donation.
Donating blood is a fast and simple procedure. Blood donors can donate up to 450ml of blood (one unit) every two-and-a-half to three months; this amount is small, given that the body contains five to six liters (10 to 12 units) of blood.
The full blood donation procedure, takes not more than 30 minutes.
There are a number of different blood types.
Distribution may be different for specific racial and ethnic groups, but in an emergency, anyone can receive type “O Negative” red blood cells; therefore, people with type “O” blood are known as “universal donors,” and those with type “AB” blood are known as “universal recipients,” because they can receive all blood groups.
According to a royal decree, the Ministry of Health does not import blood from foreign countries.
Blood is collected from residents and citizens who make regular voluntary donations of their blood.
The health directorates across the Kingdom make their own arrangements with the voluntary blood donors to contribute to this worthy cause.
An official from the Health Ministry said there are 152 blood banks throughout the Kingdom, which include 15 central blood banks, 17 large blood banks and 120 more to cover all the regions and governorates in the Kingdom.
An official from the General Directorate of Blood Banks and Laboratories said donors can donate blood at their own convenience.
He also pointed out that there are 20,000 volunteer blood donors who were awarded the Third Degree Medal from King Salman for their services to the nation.
Every year more than 500,000 volunteer blood donors are registered with the blood banks throughout the Kingdom. “Some of these donors give blood several times [a year] according to their physical health,” the official said.
